A french lilac is a double flowering Syringa vulgaris. This is because the first double flowered lilacs were created by crossing 'Azura plena' with other Syringa vulgaris at the end of the 19th century at the Lemoine Nursery in Paris, France. All double flowered Syringa vulgaris, even those introduced today are descended from 'Azura plena' and other french lilacs.
