How we grow our Lilacs at the flowering shrub farm in Voorheesville, NY 12186
Every Spring we receive lilac cuttings from from special nurseries all over the US.
We pot them in 3 gallon pots and fertilize with Espoma fertilizer.
Placed in a staging area for the first year;
In May we cut them back so they develop multiple upright stems.
After the first year we arrange them in the field under drip line.
We grow them for several years gradually spreading them further apart so they dont overshadow each other.
We fertilize twice a year in April and July.
When they begin to flower I label each one with a yellow label.
The following year we repot them in March ( 7 gallon ) and move them to the plant sale to sell for $30 each.
Lilacs with only 1 or 2 stems are cut back to a 4 inch stub. The stub is used to attach the labels too.
When those that have been cut back start to flower again we repot into a 15 gallon pot for $50.
When they outgrow the 15 gallon we repot into a 25 gallon pot for $100.
When they outgrow the 25 gallon we repot into a 45 gallon pot for $200.
